Team Triton/Mercury led by Capt Andy LoCascio, Capt John Luchka, Capt Rich Tenreiro, and local pro Dave Lilly fished an impressive 6th in their first ever entry in an American Striper Association event. The recorded weight of their largest fish was just over 26lbs. The event had over 30 boats and local conditions were tough as heavy fog made travel through the congested NY Harbor area very difficult. Only half the boats entered weighed fish. The tournament was particularly well run and the team will be participating in other events in this series. |

Team Triton Mercury, led by Captain David Chieffo along with Captains Andy LoCascio, Rich Tenreiro, and Tom Pitasi competed in the second event of the FLW Outdoors Stripers Series Tournament in New London, CT on June 21. The team placed 5th and extended its series lead to 3 lbs over the second place team and nearly 7 lbs over the thrid place team.
The crew ran outside to some of the many reefs that can be found along the Connecticut shoreline and by 6:30am they saw the fish busting on top chasing squid and sand eels. The bite was very tough as the fish were focused on the bait and were reluctant to do little more than strike at the plugs. The team used every trick on their arsenal inlcuding Yo-Zuri surface lures, suspended soft Gulp baits, Gulp tipped bucktails, and every conceivable trolling combination. Their persistence paid off and they ended up with a couple of fish that fit the tournament slot limit requirements.
Captain Andy LoCascio, host of Northeast Angling TV commented. This was a very tough day on the water, only 13 of the 49 teams were able to come to the scales with two fish. It was one of those days that reminds you just how tough this series is and how important it is to be prepared for anything..=
Team member Captain Tom Pitasis local knowledge was a big help for this event. He was able to keep the team focused on a specific area, even though the bite was very tough. He also did a great job preparing the boat for a brutal day of fishing.
Captain Rich Tenreiro, co-host of Northeast Angling TV, caught the largest fish of the day on a Yo-Zuri surface cruiser. Rich said, we had fish around us nearly all the time, we marked them on the troll and had them busting on the top in the rips. We have never used so much tackle at a single event. At one point, there was gear and tackle from every single one of our sponsors spread out on the deck.
Team Triton Mercury competed last year in the finals in Virginia Beach and placed 5th. For the 2007 season, the team placed 10th overall out of 157 boats in total points. The team heads off to West Dennis, MA on August 8th to compete in the final round of the FLW Striper Series.

Team Triton Mercury, led by Captain David Chieffo along with Captain Andy LoCascio, Captain John Luchka, and Dave Lilly competed in the FLW Outdoors Stripers Series Tournament in the Atlantic Highlands, NJ on May 31st. The team placed 1st with a combined weight of 36 pounds 2 ounces for two fish measuring between 28-34 inches, a new FLW Striper Series record!
The crew ran inside Raritan Bay and by 6:15am they saw the fish busting on top as they set their Secret Spoons into the depths. Dozens of stripers were caught and at two times the crew had five fish working! According to Captain David Chieffo, All of our biggest Striped Bass were caught trolling Secret Spoons, and on Yo-Zuri Surface Cruisers cast to boils on the surface.
Captain Andy LoCascio, host of Northeast Angling TV also commented, We continue to work very hard at putting all the pieces in place to ensure that Team Triton Mercury is successful. The team worked together, fought, and landed every fish. Captains David Chieffo and John Luchka orchestrated the measurements, weight, and the live-release Striper Tube flawlessly. Dave Lilly did an amazing job of scouting and his input was one of the big factors in our success. ”
The action was fast and furious on the outgoing tide and the team was one of the only boats fishing this school of feeding fish. At the weigh-in, angler Dave Lilly was elated that the 19 pounder caught on a Secret Spoon was the fish that put the team over the top.
Captain John Luchka said, When we got on our first piece and saw fish splashing and rising to the top, it was just a matter of which school do I throw to first?! Once the tide died off, so did the fishing and I was pleased to see that our efforts all paid off in the end.
